Delta GEMS stands for Growing and Empowering Myself Successfuly and was a brand new initiative implemented last year from Delta Sigma Theta National Headquarters. A natural outgrowth and expansion for the continuation of the highly successful "Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy: "Catching the Dreams of Tomorrow", Delta GEMS was created to "catch the dreams" of African American at-risk, adolescent girls aged 14-18 and/or grades 9 - 12. Delta GEMS is designed to serve as an outgrowth and continuation of the Delta Academy Program. Delta GEMS provides the frame work to actualize those dreams through performance of specific tasks that develop a"CAN DO" attitude.
The goals for Delta GEMS are:
instill the need to excel academically;
provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success;
assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures-high school and beyond;
create compassionate, caring and community minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and community service opportunities.
The Delta GEMS framework is composed of:
Scholarship (Academic Excellence)
Sisterhood(Self Esteem, Health Awareness & Leadership)
Show Me the Money (Financial Awareness)
Service (Social Responsibility Obtained Through Community Service)
Some of our past projects of the year include a smart money management session; healthy eating and lifestyle session; an etiquette session; community service project at a local senior citizen's facility and attending the Delta's annual scholarship banquet.
The young ladies usually meet on the third Saturday's of each month for 2 hours at a local library. To refer a young lady whom you think will enjoy and benefit from this program, contact the chapter.
